Chippewa Trail is now a stakes horse,
thanks to a determined third in the $100,000 Round Table
Stakes at Arlington. Despite being left at the gate, the
lightly-raced gelding made a sustained run from the back of
the pack to best sixth others. He was beaten six lengths
despite the tardy beginning.
Briland Farms' Chippewa Trail broke his maiden
at Churchill by an impressive 8½ lengths on May 27.
Second on two other occasions under the Twin Spires, the
3-year-old son of GENERAL ROYAL ran a very athletic
race. Jockey Pat Day maneuvered him off the rail on the
far turn to avoid a tiring pace horse, then moved him back to
the rail with a deft move as a spot opened at the top of the
stretch. From there it was all over at the grandson of A.P.
INDY increased his margin with every stride over the
favored son of A.P. INDY Capital Spending, a
half-brother to champion FLANDERS.
ROYAL MAGICIAN GRADED STAKES DEBUT
Royal Magician was sent to Aqueduct to contest
the Grade III Valley Stream on Sunday, November 23rd.
She was slammed and checked at the start, but made a late move
to finish fourth, beaten 5¼ by a half-sister to SMOKE
GLACKEN. Among the starters was even-money favorite FOREST
SECRETS, the Michael Gill filly that recorded a first-out
Beyer of 106 before finishing last in her next start, the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
IMPRESSIVE STARTERS WEEK OF NOV 8th
Royal Magician--a MSW winner at Laurel after a
debut second at Saratoga--came right back in her third start
to win a Delaware allowance by five. Even more
impressive was she was cutting back from 8½ to 6 furlongs and
jumping class. The Tony Dutrow-trained miss has
bankrolled over $40,000.
KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
Yearlings by GENERAL ROYAL continue
to be in demand. Churchill Downs leading trainer Dale
Romans purchased a colt out of Herat o'Mine for $95,000.
GENERAL ROYAL had winners 3
and 4 through 9/14, including Pimlico Msw winner Royal
Magician. She out gamed a GONE WEST filly to
break her maiden in her second start. She had been
second in the highest maiden claiming level at Saratoga in her
debut.
The offspring of GENERAL ROYAL
have had 28 starts as of 9/14, at an average distance of 6.07
furlongs. Their four wins have been at an average
distance of 7.13 furlongs. That would indicate better
things to come as these debut sprinters stretch out to seven
furlongs and beyond this fall.
He had
his second winner September 7th, and the day before, his
maiden filly Do You Love It finished fourth, beaten 3½
lengths in the Grade III Natalma at Woodbine. She has
earned $22,740 from her two starts.
GENERAL ROYAL had his first
winner in the 6th at Laurel on August 6, 2003. Ryan
Fogelsonger put the favorite on the lead, threw a cross at
Many Many Bows at the top of the stretch as they drew off by
4¾ to win as much the best. The 2-year-old filly is out
of Many Many Pearls, by Risen Star and is a homebred from the
stable of Ro
Parra.
