PETIONVILLE
2002-2003
2001 Archive

Not many horses win more than one Grade I race in a career, let alone the same year.  Even less win them by six lengths.  Yet that is exactly what ISLAND FASHION has accomplished in 2003.  An unraced maiden 51 weeks ago, the 3-year-old PETIONVILLE filly completed her odyssey with a devastating performance on December 27th in the $250,000 La Brea at Santa Anita.  Breaking from the far outside, Kent Desormeaux put Island Fashion into the mix from the opening bell.  Sitting comfortably off the flank of pacesetter Randaroo, Kent stepped on the gas at the eighth pole.  Island Fashion spurted clear in a matter of strides, stopping the teletimer in 1:21.79.  She completes her inital campaign with a record of 10-4-1-0 and earnings of $1,112,970.

The 3-year-old Everest Stables homebred made her turf debut in the Grade I Matriarch November 30th at Hollywood Park.  Despite being 5-wide and being totally dismissed at 87-1 versus an accomplished group of turf elders, she acquitted herself quite well as she was beaten just ¾-length for all the money.  Len Ragozin acknowledged her effort in "The Sheets" by awarding her a 2½, the best number for the race.  Next was second-place Musical Chimes at 3½ and winner Heat Haze at 4.

Island Fashion won three stakes in 2003 and finished in the money in 7 of 9 starts while starting at eight different tracks for three different trainers.  She earned $962,970 in a campaign worthy of consideration as an Eclipse Award finalist.

CAUGHT IN THE RAIN

The aptly named CAUGHT IN THE RAIN caught the soft course she likes to become a graded stakes winner for the second consecutive year.  Richard Migliore guided her to the outside in hope of better ground, and she survived a three-horse photo to win Aqueduct's Athenia H (G3).  The 4-year-old filly was purchased privately by Heiligbrodt Stable and Walter L. New.  She went off form until returned to her original trainer Preciado Guadalupe.  This was her second stakes win of the year and takes her earnings over $300,000.

VOODOO Gets His Graded Win

VOODOO became a graded stakes winner annexing the Sport Page H (G3) at the Big A on Breeders’ Cup Day.  Six times stakes-placed previously in New York, including the Grade I Carter and Vosburgh, Voodoo has been a consistent performer through four seasons of racing.  Perhaps his best race was in a 2002 Saratoga allowance.  In one of the toughest nw3x you'll ever see, Voodoo went gate-to-wire to defeat MG1SW ALDEBERAN and G2SW SMOOTH JAZZ (by Storm Boot).  His earnings now stand at $454,356.

ISLAND FASHION Marches Through Her Conditions

She broke her maiden in a Listed Stakes, the WinStar/Sunland Park Oaks.  Her "non-winners of one" was a Grade III triumph, the $500,000 Delaware Oaks.  Her next condition fell by the wayside in the 123rd Running of The Alabama (G1) at Saratoga.  The only thing that could top it is to win her "non-winners of three" in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

ISLAND FASHION broke alertly and John Velazquez initially seemed content to sit in the catbird seat behind Awesome Humor and Bird Town.  But as Bird Town took back under Prado, Velazquez—in a move reminiscent of this year’s Belmont Stakes—maneuvered the rail horse to secure a stalking position on the outside as they went into the first turn.  They took over with five furlongs to run and steadily increased their advantage with no one able to mount a serious challenge as the margin was six lengths at the wire.  The jockey was quoted as saying "She's got a really nice cruising speed."

Final time of 2:05 was very competitive with the 2:03 2/5 run two races earlier in Saratoga Cup (G2) won by PUZZLEMENT with 2002 Breeders’ Cup Classic VOLPONI 3¼ lengths second.

The Crestwood Farm-raised miss has won 3 of 6 lifetime starts (all in 2003) for career earnings of $917,970.  She was bred and is owned by longtime client Everest Stables, Inc. (Jeff Nielsen).  The Barclay Tagg trainee defeated three Grade I winners.

It was observed by more than a few that Tagg was able deny Bobby Frankel the Triple Tiara (with the Frankel-trained Spoken Fur third) whereas a few weeks ago Frankel denied Tagg the Triple Crown when Empire Maker beat Funny Cide into third.

KEIAI SAKURA has been knocking on the door in stakes company for the last several months.  Saturday, August 2 at Ellis Park the door was answered.  She was a 1¼ length winner of the Audubon Oaks -L, taking her career earning to nearly $150,000.

ISLAND FASHION romps to a 6½ length victory in the $500,000 Delaware Oaks (G3).  Read more at racing.bloodhorse.com/

PUBLICATION missed Grade I glory by a controversial head in Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Invitational Handicap at Hollywood on July 5, 2003.  Winner JOEY FRANCO clearly drifted out several paths in the stretch, but after a long look the stewards let the outcome stand.  Final time for the seven furlongs was a quick 1:21 2/5.

PUBLICATION made his second start back from a long layoff May 10th at Hollywood Park .  The 4-year-old gelding was called by Vic Stauffer as having to "make up 11 lengths in the last quarter mile to win Los Angeles Times Handicap."  He made up ten of those with a determined run up the rail, splitting horses in deep stretch, passing such accomplished sprinters as ECHO EDDIE, DISTURBINGTHEPEACE, and MEN'S EXCLUSIVE en route to a second place finish in the Grade III, $200,000 event.  HOMBRE RAPIDO proved to be one fast dude, leading every step of the way to score by a length in 1:08 2/5.

PETIONVILLE INDEED (00 f  Noble Indeed by Sovereign Dancer) scored a listed win, annexing the $100,000 Walmac Lone Star Oaks on the 4th of July.  The recent maiden winner was making only her fourth lifetime start.  Nonetheless, she scored by an impressive four lengths.

HARBOR BLUES won the battle but lost the war.  The promising Everest Stables homebred was sent to the lead of the Grade II Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park.  She led the two favorites through brisk fractions of 22.82 and 45.94.  Ruby's Reception swept by in the stretch, but the Petionville filly stayed brave on the front end to hold second for her initial graded stakes placing.

April 5-6, 2003, saw three promising allowance wins for PETIONVILLE progeny.  At Gulfstream, Keiai Sakura notched her second win in a row, taking her turf debut by 1¾ lengths.  The Morihiro Kameda homebred, trained by Akiko Gothard has earned over $50,000 from six starts.  Grade II stakes winner PUBLICATION made his first start since giving chase to WAR EMBLEM in the Illinois Derby a year ago.  Now trained by Vladamir Cerin, the 4-year-old gelding bested nine others winning a 6½ furlong optional claimer at Santa Anita.  Final time of 1:15 3/5 to push his earnings over $200,000.  Meanwhile at Oaklawn Park, Sweet Jayana scored for the second time in only three trips to the post.  A maiden winner at Arlington last year, she made her seasonal debut a successful one.  She held safe from the favorite by a neck, eight lengths clear from the others in a snappy 1:10.45 for six panels.

Everest Stables, Inc.'s ISLAND FASHION (00 f  Danzigs Fashion by A Native Danzig) captured the $256,450 WinStar/Sunland Park Oaks by two lengths.  Jockey Iggy Puglisi kept the lightly raced filly well-back early, raced four-wide into the turn and reversed a two-length deficit at the eighth-pole to complete the two-turn mile in 1:36.29.  Described by drf.com as "one of the richest maiden wins ever" the $153,870 check increases her lifetime winnings to $167,970.  She made her career debut in HARBOR BLUES's Arizona Oaks, finishing fourth.  Island Fashion was coming off a nose defeat in a maiden event at Santa Anita.  Trainer Nick Canani is reportedly keeping an eye on the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on the first Friday in May.

On February 1, 2003, HARBOR BLUES (00 f  Downtown Blues by Seattle Song) broke her maiden in her sixth career start.  She put up a thoroughly dominating performance in the $75,000 Arizona Oaks, drawing away to an 11½-length victory.  Jockey Iggy Puglisi showed his mount the lead and the rail heading into the first turn.  The half-sister to G2SW NIGHT PATROL was never challenged as she completed one and one sixteenth miles in 1:43.44.  She has earned $61,212 for owner/breeder Everest Stables, Inc.

CAUGHT IN THE RAIN (99 f  Jinger Feathers by Fred Astaire) caught a tough field in the $173,700 Mrs. Revere S (G2) at Churchill Downs.  She won by a determined neck from Flaxman Holdings, Ltd's Glia (by A.P. Indy out of a sister to Machiavellian) and multiple graded stakes winner BEDANKEN was another neck back in third.  Among the others vanquished was Darley Stud Management, Inc's SHOWLADY, a $4,000,000 yearling out of champion ESCENA.  Read more at bloodhorse.com.

She captured her first stakes victory, annexing the $50,000 Mrs. Penny Stakes [R] at Philadelphia Park.   Total earnings now $189,506.

TRUE PASSION (98 c  Trumanita, by Capote) $311,572.  Gate-to-wire winner of the $183,000 Philadelphia Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G3) on July 6.  Engaged by race favorite YONAGUSKA, he dispatched of that one on the turn en-route a 2¼-length score in 1:10.72.

Gate-to-wire winner of the $100,000 Wilmington H -L at Delaware Park on June 15.  After dueling 8-5 favorite He's a Knockout into submission, he drew off to a 2¼-length score stopping the teletimer at 1:09.81 for six furlongs.

Haskell Day at Monmouth Park.  After knocking out a 43-and-change half, was unable to hold the lead, finishing second by a neck in the $65,000 Teddy Drone.  Final time was 1:08 4/5.

Voodoo (98 g  Slide Show by Slewicide): $307,872.
Two geldings took down the lion
s share of the Carter H (G1) purse Saturday April 13, at The Big A. Millionaire AFFIRMED SUCCESS held off the late charge of Petionvilles first-crop son Voodoo, holding sway by one length at the line. Voodoo charged four-wide from the back of the pack after getting bumped at the start. Final time for seven furlongs was 1:21 4/5.

His latest outing was back to Grade I company for the $300,000 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park.  He tracked the early pace of BONAPAW and was passed in upper stretch by ALDEBERAN to finish third, beaten five lengths.

HALL OF GOLD (98 f  Kildare by Flying Paster): $164,625
Winner of the Richmond Handicap has been retired.

Pinky Pizwanski 3rd in the Find Handicap [L] at Laurel Park on August 11.  On Friday night, October 11 at Meadowlands, he was second, beaten a length to the highly-regarded SAINT VERRE (trained by Shug McGaughey).  Total earnings now $162,065.

Bold Lover was second in the restricted CTHS Sales Stakes at Assiniboia Downs on the 2nd of September.  From the Equibase chart "BOLD LOVER, broke slowly, stalked the 5-horse duel off the rail, was full of run in late turn behind the duelers looking for room, came out and bumped LEAD HOUND, was bothered by that one coming in on him in early stretch, finished well when clear." you could say he had a tough trip.
