KEENELAND YEARLING BRINGS $900,000
A full sister to MGSW RUNWAY MODEL
brought a final bid of $900,000 from John Ferguson, Sheikh
Mohammed’s buying representative, at the 2006 Keeneland
September Yearling Sale. Bloodhorse.com tells it like
this:
Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock manager, John Ferguson, purchased the Petionville filly. The bay yearling is a full sister to 2004 Darley Alcibiades (gr. II) and Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) winner Runway Model, and she is a half-sister to 2004 Turf Paradise Derby winner Mambo Train (by Kingmambo). Their dam is the 13-year-old stakes-winning Houston mare Ticket to Houston.
Pope McLean of Crestwood Farm consigned the $900,000 Petionville filly as agent. Everest Stables bred her in Kentucky.
"We've never bought a Petionville before, but he's a horse that's capable of doing it as he's shown with her full sister, who is a winner of the Darley Alcibiades," Ferguson said. "She's a beautiful filly. Sheikh Mohammed went out and saw her and loved her. The good ones cost a lot."
2005 NEWS
Illinois Champions Announced
Petionville daughter SLEWVILLE has been
named champion Illinois 3-year-old filly for 2004. Bred by
the Everest Stables, the daughter of the Seattle Slew mare
Slewtress won both the Lady Hallie and Purple Violet Stakes from
six starts, amassing earnings of $112,870.
SLEWVILLE is currently in training at Calder
Race Course as she readies for her 4-year-old campaign.
Patrick Valenzuela has taken the mount on RUNWAY MODEL
for the Kentucky Oaks. He is currently leading rider
at the Santa Anita meeting, despite missing the first few weeks
because of suspension. P Val won the Oaks twenty years ago
on FRAN'S VALENTINE.
RUNWAY MODEL handled herself well in the
$500,000 Ashland S. (G1) at Keeneland on Saturday, April
9. SIS
CITY, 16-length winner of the Davona Dale in her last start,
was equally as impressive in this one. She sat off the
longshot pace and lengthened her advantage to 10½ lengths at
the wire. However, the Kentucky Oaks has been the
long-stated goal of trainer Bernie Flint and we will see if
Runway Model can turn the tables on the first Friday in
May.
ISLAND FASHION was back to defend her
title in the Grade I Santa Monica Handicap on January 30.
Never far back from blistering fractions, she swept to the lead
on the turf after being checked slightly by jockey Patrick
Valenzuela. Salt Champ, trained by Richard Mandella wore
down Island Fashion inside the eighth pole to prevail by a
length. Island Fashion now sports a line of 18-6-3-0 and
lifetime earnings of $1,777,970.
BREEDERS’ CUP RESULTS
Petionville was represented by three starters
at the World
Thoroughbred Championships at Lone Star Park. RUNWAY MODEL
finished a troubled third in the Juvenile Fillies to favorite SWEET
CATOMINE. She saved ground under Rafael Bejarano but
was unable to squeeze through along the rail or between horses
in the stretch. Frizette winner BALLETO (UAE) held
second.
ISLAND FASHION made a menacing move on
the far turn in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff
- Presented by Nextel. The wide trip and prompting of a
quick pace resulted in a respectable fifth place finish for the
three-time Grade 1 winner. Look a return to the turf in
her next start as the Matriarch at Hollywood looms a likely
target for the talented and versatile Everest Stables homebred.
SIXTH GRADED STAKES WINNER
FOR PETIONVILLE
RUNWAY MODEL added $248,000 to her
bankroll with an impressive, gutsy run at Keeneland on October

SALES YEARLINGS AT FASIG-TIPTON KENTUCKY
Petionville was represented by two sales
yearlings at the July 19-20 Kentucky vendue. Day One saw
his colt out of Purely Excessive (dam of stakes winner VERY
VEGAS) bring $105,000 as Hip 240. He was purchased by
Dry Creek Stables LLC. Closing day saw Hip 310 hammered
down to $215,000 as Nevada Racing Stable LLC came away with the
much sought-after filly. She is out of Untangled, an
unraced Unbridled mare which has already produced the champion
imported colt in Panama.
STAKES HORSES (First Crop are
6-year-olds)
ISLAND FASHION
Second in the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Handicap!
She joins all-time greats Next Move and Gamely as the only
fillies or mares to finish as high as second in the Big
Cap.
Island Fashion settled nicely in fifth down the
backside, never more than two or three lenghts from a sensible
pace. Race favorite Southern Image went through an opening
along the rail nearing the turn. Spinning out of the turn,
it was Saint Buddy and Island Fashion going wide to
challenge. Shortly after they entered the stretch it was
down to the filly and the favorite. He had the jump on her
and the inside trip. But Island Fashion was tenacious down
the stretch. The final margin was but a length and a
quarter in final time of 2:01 3/5. A length and a quarter
from history.
Will tackle the boys in the Big Cap! No
distaffer has ever won the Santa Anita Handicap. Read more at

Does it again! January 17, 2004, saw her
take on Grade I company once again. This time it was in
the $250,000 Santa Monica Handicap over seven furlongs.
Her last race saw her soundly defeat Eclipse Award 3-year-old
filly finalist ELLOLUV. This time it was older
filly nominee SIGHTSEEK. The time,
1:21.37 was quicker than last (so was the track). The
margin was less (¾-length over BUFFYTHECENTERFOLD).
But the result was the same; another Grade I win. GOT
KOKO was third while SIGHTSEEK checked in 4¾ lengths
in arrears. Read more at bloodhorse.com
