PRIMAL STORM FULFILLING PROMISE

PRIMAL STORM cruises in a seven-length tour-de-force at Belmont Park, winning the first graded stakes for 2-year-olds of 2004.  Read more at bloodhorse.com

NICE DAY FOR BOOT

Debuting April 30, 2004 for the Steve Asmussen barn, Primal Storm took the lead shortly after leaving the gate.  He drew clear but was soon challenged by $1.25 million yearling Consolidator (by Storm Cat).  Rebuffing that challenge, he drew clear at the top of the long Churchill stretch, winning by a geared-down six lengths.  Shane Sellers pumped his first once, then again after they flashed under the wire in :51.29.  The track record is held by CHILUKKI (:51).  Stay tuned for more from this Crestwood-raised and -sold 2-year-old.

CRESTWOOD EXACTA IN HOLLYWOOD OPENER

STORMIN' LYON provided STORM BOOT with his 3rd stakes winner of 2004, going gate-to-wire to win the $75,000 Harry Henson Stakes on April 21st.  The margin was a head over Wimplestiltskin in the 5½ furlong turf event.

Stormin' Lyon was bred in Kentucky by Donna Moore and William Shatner (yes, him).  His third win in five lifetime starts shows earnings over $88,000.  Motel Lass is booked to STORM BOOT for 2004.

VEGAS

VERY VEGAS takes Santa Anita stakes feature on February 29.  The topweight was winning her third stakes from just nine career efforts.  Read more at bloodhorse.com

Everest Stables has knocked down the Arizona Oaks for the second consecutive year.  Last year it was with a homebred daughter of Petionville.  This time his STORM BOOT miss VERY VEGAS was able to win the $75,000 listed event by a head.  After a half in :45 2/5 for the 8½ furlong distance left her nine lengths to the good, she was given a breather on the turn while the others were allowed to play catch-up.  From there she held safe, getting her final three-sixteenths in a very respectable :32.64.

STORM BOOT AT THE SALES

Success at the recent yearling sales include:

$280,000 for a filly out of Tada at Saratoga Summer Yearlings to Ken McPeek, Agent

$170,000 for a filly out of Princeton Lady at Keeneland September to Jim Tafel

$115,000 for a filly out of No No Perdomo at Keeneland September to Mike Machowsky, Agent

His first 22 yearlings to sell in 2003 have averaged $52,932, a +26% increase from his 2002 average.

SMOOTH JAZZ FULFILLS PROMISE

SMOOTH JAZZ (99 c  Blushing Issue, by Blushing John) fulfilled the promise shown in him when owner Michael Tabor purchased the then-3-year-old colt for a reported $950,000 as he led the Commonwealth Breeders Cup Stakes (G2) gate-to-wire at Keeneland.  Smooth Jazz becomes the SIXTH graded winner for his sire.  Bred on a $6,000 season, the breeder of Blushing Issue paid the highest stud fee of any of his graded winners.  STORM BOOT's first crop of foals sired at the $15,000 level hit the races this year.  Read more about the Commonwealth at bloodhorse.com

On April 5, 2003, the venerable gelding NIGHT PATROL has won a stakes race for the third consecutive year.  After trying stakes company at Turf Paradise (not Turfway Park as reported by Thoroughbred Daily News) earlier in the year, trainer Nick Canani sent the 7-year-old campaigner that direction again.  This time the aim was the $105,300 Sunland Park H.  This time his aim was true.  Never far from the front, jockey Iggy Puglisi edged clear in early stretch and from there was never seriously threatened.  Nine furlongs went in a crisp 1:48 3/5.  His lifetime achievements now stand at 50-10-9-5 and $704,273.

As of April 2, 2003, STORM BOOT is already the sire of TWO individual 2-year-old winners.  His winners have been at Santa Anita and Golden Gate.  These two runners represent the first crop of STORM BOOT sired at the $15,000 stud fee level.

STAKES HORSES

NIGHT PATROL (96 g  Downtown Blues, by Seattle Song) keeps moving from strength to strength. Read more on his most recent stakes victory in the Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile (G2).

NIGHT PATROL continues to affirm his affinity for the Hollywood Park turf course.  Cleverly handled by José Valdivia in the June 15 Grade I Charles Whittingham Handicap, the six-year-old gelding controlled things on the front end.  He was allowed to get six furlongs in 1:15.69.  Engaged on the far turn by Grade 1 winners STARTAC and CONTINENTAL RED, those bids were summarily swatted like a beat cop wielding his night stick.  They flew the final half-mile in 45 and 4, Night Patrol eventually succumbing to the stalking tactics of Garrett Gomez and DENON, a French classic-placed winner of last year’s Hollywood Derby (G1).  Night Patrol was sandwiched between the uncoupled Bobby Frankel entry as race favorite SKIPPING was third.  Finishing fourth was SARAFAN, the lone American conqueror of pro-temp turf division leader BEAT HOLLOW, another from the mighty Juddmonte/Frankel arsenal.

July 28 at Del Mar, 4th beaten 2½ lengths by SARAFAN, BEAT HOLLOW, and REDATORRE (BRZ) in the $400,000 Eddie Read H (G1).  Previously on May 5, he notched his first graded win in the $109,700 Inglewood H (G3) at Hollywood Park. Hot-riding Victor Espinoza guided the Everest Stables homebred to a front-running score in the Inglewood. Unlike the Kentucky Derby however, he did not lull anyone to sleep on the front end as Alex Solis was lapped on the front-runner with 7-5 favorite Redattore (Brz) the entire trip. After zipping a mile in 1:331 both runners clocked the final sixteenth in six seconds flat, stopping the teletimer in 1:39.35, just three ticks off the course record.

SMOOTH JAZZ in only his second start, remained undefeated beating Tank’s Expectation by 2 3/4 lengths in Saturday's Aqueduct feature, the $82,950 Best Turn Stakes for 3-year-olds. He overcame a bump at the start and racing three wide drew off in the stretch. He ran the six furlong distance in 1:10.76.

NICE BOOTS BABY (99 f  Foxfire by Premiership) won the Ruthless Stakes at Aqueduct by 2 1/2 lengths, remaining undefeated in three career starts for owner trainer Anthony Dutrow. Her total earnings stand at $94,267..

"She showed how good she is today," said Dutrow. "Obviously, we've got a filly we can take a hold of and maybe she'll be able to stretch out to some longer races down the road. She was very good today."

"I was surprised we didn't outbreak Al Max Diner and once we were behind, I didn't want to rush my filly. I just had a ton of horse on the turn and decided to wait before I circled. I thought she was real impressive. For her to completely switch running styles like that says a lot." said Jockey Mario Pino.

STORM BOOT notched his 9th stakes winner of 2002 on Kentucky Cup Turf Day.   RED LIGHTNING (98 g  Doodle by Dewan) won the six-furlong Kentucky Cup Dash by 2½ lengths.  Last at the top--or to be more accurate in describing the Kentucky Downs course--the bottom of the stretch, Calvin Borel guided him to the outside where he ran down the leaders inside the furlong grounds.  Bred by Pope Sr, Pope Jr, and Marc McLean, the 4-year-old gelding has now earned $159,914.

On July 28, FAGER’S ISLAND (99 c  Link to Erin by Linkage) became the 7th stakes winner this year for his sire, annexing the $50,000 Japan Racing Association Stakes at Laurel Park.  The race saw Crestwood Farm-sired runners place one-two.

LUCKY PAWS (95 m  Now Account by Private Account) owns the Rockingham Park Distaff Handicap.  Second in this event last year, she did one better on July 6.  Laying down an opening quarter in 22 2/5, she steadily drew away from the field to score by a 7½-length victory.  Among the vanquished was 3-5 Laurie's Balada (Saint Ballado) trained by Nick Zito.  Total earnings $304,542

STORM ALARM (98 c  Good Reputation by Gran Zsar) won the Tex Heritage Won the Texas Heritage S. at Sam Houston Park on March 16. The chart reads: " Storm Alarm and was sent right to the front to set a moderate pace, was well handled then was roused in upper stretch when challenged and drew off in late stretch." He increased his earnings to $32,710

STORMY FOREVER (99 c  Forever Fine by Sunshine Forever) can't seem to find his way out of the Land of Enchantment.  He stormed to the lead on the far turn in the Ruidoso Thoroughbred Derby but was unable to hold it, finishing third by 3¼ lengths.

On September 15th, he was third in the Albuquerque Derby.  Interestingly enough, he had previously won the same race.

He had previously annexed the Albuquerque Derby on the third Monday in June.  Favored at 80 cents on the dollar, he won that by 1½ lengths covering 8½ furlongs in 1:45 1/5.

On March 14th he ran a good second in the Academy Road S at Santa Anita.  The chart reads "STORMY FOREVER stalked the pace outside, bid alongside the pacesetter leaving the second turn, took a short lead in the stretch, fought back through the drive but could not quite match the winner late." His record stands at a win and 3 seconds from 5 starts. UPDATE third in the $82,050 La Puente, one mile on the Santa Anita turf course.

Total earnings $116,023

SCIOTO BOOTSKI (98 f  Skilaunch by Relaunch) won a stakes for the second consecutive year, this time bringing home top prize in the Honey Jay Handicap for state-breds at Beulah Park.

After a third-place effort on Columbus Day in the Best of Ohio Sprint Stakes, she celebrated the recent #2 ranking of the Ohio State Buckeyes by posting her own #2 ranking in the Scarlet And Gray H at Beulah Park.  She has now earned in excess of $148,000.

Yourfinalanswer (99 f  Brittany’s Bid by Spectacular Bid) set a quick pace of 1:10.39 through the first six furlongs of the one mile $55,912 San Jose Stakes at Bay Meadows. The Bob Hess pupil ran on to be 3rd beaten three lengths.
